Seismic Efficiency and Seismic Moment for Small Craters on Mars Formed in the Layered Uppermost Crust

چکیده
Seismic activity generated by impacts depends on impact conditions and properties of the site. Here, we combined mapping regolith thickness with numerical simulations to better estimate seismic efficiency moment in small events uppermost crust Mars. Seismic constraints on temperature of the Australian uppermost mantle
We derive estimates of temperature of the Australian continental mantle between 80 and 350 km depth from two published S-velocity models. Lithospheric temperatures range over about 1000 8C, with a large-scale correlation between temperature and tectonic age. In detail however, variations ranging from 200 to 700 8C occur within each tectonic province. At the current seismic resolution, strictly ...
متن کاملImpact - generated seismic signals on Mars
Meteorite impacts will be a key seismic source for probing Mars’ interior during the InSight mission. Maximising data exploitation requires a good understanding of impact-generated seismic ground motions (waves), which has been limited by a lack of observational data and the practical difficulty of replicating relevant martian impact conditions in experiments. The aim of this PhD project is to ...
متن کاملSeismic signatures of strange stars with crust
We study acoustic oscillations (eigenfrequencies, velocity distributions, damping times) of normal crusts of strange stars. These oscillations are very specific because of huge density jump at the interface between the normal crust and the strange matter core. The oscillation problem is shown to be self-similar. For a low (but non-zero) multipolarity l the fundamental mode (without radial nodes...
متن کاملUniversality of the Seismic Moment-frequency Relation
We analyze the seismic moment-frequency relation in various depth ranges and for different seismic regions, using Flinn-Engdahl’s regionalization of global seismicity. Three earthquake lists of centroid-moment tensor data have been used: the Harvard catalog, the USGS catalog, and the HUANG et al. (1997) catalog of deep earthquakes. The results confirm the universality of the b-values and the ma...
متن کاملSize Frequency Distributions for Very Small Craters on Mars
Introduction: Mars is a complex world, as has been increasingly revealed by the numerous missions to that planet during the past decade. Conclusions about the planet’s global geological processes of cratering and erosion (e.g. as reviewed by Chapman & Jones [1]), as inferred from early global imaging (e.g. Mariner 9 and Viking Orbiters) may retain some generalized credibility, but as the resolu...
